未来への贈りもの a gift for the future

Foreword
We are members of the Japan Industrial Designers’ Association (JIDA), an organization made up of professional industrial designers. Sometimes referred to as ‘product designers’, industrial designers design all manner of mass-produced products that are an integral part of everyday life, such as shinkansen (‘bullet trains’), cars, electrical goods and other daily necessities.
In 1997, JIDA set up an environmental research committee and since then, we have been looking into the question of what designers can do for the environment.
With the idea of showing large numbers of people the environmentally-friendly designs that resulted from those designers’ efforts, the first eco-design exhibition was held in 2003 here at OZONE, showcasing designs created by professional industrial designers.
From 2004 onwards we have been running an eco design class, finding participants from among design students. With the resulting designs from that class, combined with those from professional designers, we have been putting on a “New ideas in eco design novice and professional concepts” exhibition, with this year being the seventh time it’s been held.
Once again this year, many design ideas are on display, based around the theme of “a gift for the future.” We very much hope that many people will come and see this exhibition.

Theme
“A gift for the future”
With a heavy reliance on fossil fuels such as coal and oil, the 20th century was a period of mass production, mass consumption, and mass disposal. This has meant that we’re now able to use a wide variety of products at a reasonable price, and we can enjoy a lifestyle that’s both affluent and convenient.
The flip side of that, however, is that mass consumption also leads to mass disposal, causing air and environmental pollution, and even contributing to global warming. In addition, the twin perils of damage caused by climate change and environmental degradation are leading to the extinction of many living creatures. It’s thought that life in the near future will simply become unsustainable.
We feel that the time has come for us to stop for a moment, think about what “a good lifestyle” really means, and make some major changes to the way we do things.
With our sights set on a sustainable future in harmony with the environment, and in which everyone can live safely and with peace of mind, what can we, as designers, do right now?
Forming a link to the next generation and full of imagination, “A gift for the future” sees both professional and novice designers put forward ideas and designs from a variety of different perspectives.
